ABUSED NEGLECTED ABANDONED
For many animals, being at the shelter is a blessing in disguise. The numbers of abandoned, neglected and abused are large. They have been hidden in the shadows, or sometimes even in plain sight, suffering alone, for long periods of time without proper care.
The shelter is a frightening place for most animals but it often provides protection from the desert heat, warmth in the winter, safety from traffic, and food for the starving. Staff veterinarians can provide basic care while animals wait during their stray hold period. Emaciated animals are common, as are sick, elderly , special needs and abandoned animals, dumped and left to fend for themselves. Some are victims of obvious abuse. Many have been neglected medically or suffer from parasite infestations. Some dogs are victims of the illegal dog fighting industry, showing signs of being used for fighting, or used for bait for training other fighting dogs. FAR too many pets are actually dumped there by their own owners, who cannot or will not care for them any longer. |
