Neighborhood Education
Chaining
I photograph fairly extensively within poorer areas of Phoenix, spending time with families and discussing any issues they are having with neighborhood strays, affordable care and proper housing and safety for their animals. Chained dogs are a sad but common sight. Unaltered animals contribute to the large numbers of pregnant dogs or newly born puppies.

puppiesThis smaller older dog was very pregnant when I saw her. The owners did not even realize it.
She had no shelter, food or water right at that moment, or a place to have her puppies The family readily agreed to accept help to get her spot ready for her new family and did go on later to use spay vouchers for her and another pet. |

Neglect and minimal care |
These dogs were photographed in the parking lot of the County shelter while their owner was inside signing paper to turn them in. He was moving. They were friendly in person outside. Inside, they were terrified, unsocialized and were put to sleep the next day. No one wanted them.

DumpingOne of the worse things to discover is an animal that has clearly been starved to death on purpose, or even ignored medically to the point that they are emaciated, weak, sick and near death.
Often these animals are simply dumped out of a car or truck on the side of a side street, in the desert,or even in a parking lot. Sometimes they are left abandoned in back yards of chained inside vacant homes when people move. These animals desperately NEED to be found and brought into the shelter, for food, temporary medical care and to keep them safe from traffic, further abuse or attacks by other animals. |
Horses
The horse racing industryFostering a suddenly retired young horse from the track for a local horse rescue can save lives. Often all that is needed a stall rest and basic training skills to acclimate these horses to a less stressful and quiet life.
|
The local race tracks of Arizona are not among the largest or most prestigious in the United States. There are many owners that may have only one or two horses and a low operating budget to work with. Race horses are often euthanized even as young as two years old for minor injuries that affect their ability to compete and make their veterinary care too costly for them to be re homed quickly to a sporting or hobby home |
Breeding Stables |
Arizona is a big "horse" state, with racing, the Arabian horse show venues, dressage competitions, eventing, western and rodeo events and even polo. Breeders continue to produce horses to meet the demand for younger animals that are not yet injured or that will compete in the show ring. |
This horse was used for over 5 years at a large breeding facility as a "teaser" stallion. He was never let out of his stall. He was kept only to provide initial stallion contact with the mares at the barn to determine if they were coming into season , and be ready for the show stallions on the property. He was finally rescued after the stables closed.
